ABOUT WARMINSTER AND ITS VILLAGES
Located in the South-western corner of Wiltshire, not far from the Somerset/Dorset borders, Warminster is a bustling market town with excellent shopping facilities, a wide range of other amenities and good schooling, and was once one of the most important wool and cereal trading centres in the South of England, still evident from the many fine merchants houses which remain.
However Warminster is now a largely residential town, although its strategic location on the Southern escarpment of the Salisbury Plain has made it a natural choice for the Army to base its land warfare training centre and much of the area's prosperity results from the military's presence.
Numerous pretty villages abound closeby, all unspoilt and each with a character of it's own. Hence it's easy to understand why so many people have chosen to make their homes in the area, with villages such as Crockerton, Chapmanslade and Corsley, bordering the renowned Longleat Estate, whilst a cluster of 5 tiny hamlets - Longbridge, Hill, Brixton, Monkton and Kingston - make up the Deverill Valley meandering along the upper reaches of the River Wylye before it enters the picturesque Wylye Valley flowing past such villages as Bishopstrow, Sutton Veny, Norton Bavant, Heytesbury, Codford and Wylye itself, before converging with the Avon a few miles further down the valley near Salisbury.
The beautiful undulating countryside surrounding Warminster reflects the diverse agricultural activities of the region, with cereal growing, dairy cattle, sheep and pig rearing to name but a few. Whilst discreetly hidden in the depths of Longleat Woods is Center Parcs' Longleat Forest holiday village.
Warminster is served by regular 'buses and trains and uniquely the town is close to 3 major trunk routes, the London - Exeter A303, the Bath - Salisbury A36, and the A350 giving swift access North to the M4 motorway and South to Poole and the channel coast. The other major centres in the area including Westbury, Frome, Trowbridge, Bath and Salisbury are all within comfortable driving distance as are the various Salisbury Plain military establishments and London is now very accessible via the A303/M3.
